Here's the rest of the story I hope.
he rest of my days with him. I was broken out of my thoughts as my master spoke.
“A new dog?”
“Yes Jacobs, a new dog. I know you’ve only had Maya six months, but she can’t be worked again until she’s fully healed. Like I said that will take months, and you do need a partner Jacobs.” Before my master could respond, Stanley came over to the two men.
“Actually commander,” He said, “Jacobs has been dismissed.”
“What?” both the commander and my master said together.
“Dismissed.” Stanley said again, “he’s served his time, now it’s time for him to return home. He has know reason to be here any longer.” My master looked at Stanley.
“But I’ve served,”
“Three years,” Stanley said, “that’s plenty. I think it’s time you return to your family and start your life a new. It was very nice to meet you Skyler Jacobs, and you did well, but your time is up.” As he finished speaking, he turned and left. After he had left, my master walked over to me.
“Good bye Maya girl.” He said quietly. “I loved working with you. You were my best partner ever. You get better now, and do another man proud.” As he said this, he stroked my head once before walking away.
“She still won’t eat?” I heard John say to Stanley two days later. Eat, how could I eat when I’d lost every thing? How could I eat when my master was gone?
“No Stanley, she won’t. I don’t know what to do.”
“Guess you’ll have to force feed her.”
“What, are you crazy? She’ll bite my hand off.”
“You don’t have much choice. If you don’t feed her, then she’ll die. So you only have one choice, force feed her.” As Stanley approached me with the food, I began to growl and back away.
“I’m telling you John, she won’t let me near her. This isn’t going to work. What do you want to bet she misses Jacobs?”
“I was thinking that to.” John said, “but why Jacobs? She never got close to another handler before.”
“Beats me, but I bet that’s why she’s not eating.”
“Guess we should consult a vet then.” John said. After the two men had walked away, I began to formulate a plan.
It was pitch black when I started digging. It took only a few minutes for me to dig a hole big enough for me to slip through. After digging the hole I was exhausted. I still hadn’t recovered fully from the bullet wound, but that wouldn’t stop me from finding my master. After resting for a few minutes, I slowly slipped out of the hole, then began to look for the scent of my master. Lucky for me, I hadn’t been taken back to the kennels yet, so the scent of my master was still fresh. Very quietly, I began to follow the scent of my master out of the camp.
I lay exhausted in the dirt, my tongue hanging out of my mouth. I had followed my master’s scent for four days straight, but to know avail. I had lost the trail a short distance away from the camp, but for the last four days had been trying to find it again. I had thought about returning to the camp in defeat, but new I’d probably receive a mighty beating for escaping my pen. But where else did I have to go? I couldn’t be a wild wolf, for I new nothing about surviving in the wild. I briefly remembered my pack, but had been taken away from them as a pup, and so new little about them. Deciding that I’d had enough of the military life, I decided to strike out on my own. Maybe I should of waited to break out of the pens once I was back in Canada, maybe then I’d have an easier time finding a pack to hook up with. As it was, I wasn’t anywhere near Canada, and had to find another way to survive in this world full of humans. Deciding that I better make a move for the humans were calling to me, I swiftly slipped in to the bushes and began my journey once again.
I was awakened by the sound of a truck five days later.
“Mat, what do you suppose that is in the bushes there?” I was to weak to move, for I’d found very little food.
“Looks like a dog of some sort.” Another man said. As they approached me, I began to growl softly.
“Easy now.” The man called Mat said gently, “just take it easy. Were not going to hurt you.” Hearing the gentle tone in his voice, I allowed the man to touch me.
“She’s very skinny Jay.” The man called Mat said, “looks like she hasn’t eaten in a while.” Very gently, he lifted my head in his hands and poured some water in to my mouth. I swallowed it gratefully, realizing there was know point in starving myself any longer. My master wasn’t coming back, and I had to except that.
“Think we should take her back with us Mat?” Jay asked.
“Sure, we’ll get her better, then let her go.”
“Let her go?”
“She’s a wolf Jay, she needs to be in the wild with her kind.”
“She looks to tame for that.” Jay said, “she’ll die.” Mat sighed,
“very well, we’ll take her with us and see how she does.”
I awoke the next morning to someone stroking me, and a warm fire.
“Hungry girl?” Jay asked me gently. I yawned in response, and Jay laughed. “Looks like you’ve had it pretty rough. Where’d you come from anyway?”
“She is pretty tame, isn’t she?” Mat said, “the question is, why? Who would tame a wolf?”
“Probably someone who thinks their all high and mighty.” Jay said. “If you ask me, she should of never been tamed. After she eats, lets take her outside and see how she likes the snow.” My ears perked up at the mention of snow. Maybe I could look for a wolf pack that would except me.
As soon as the men led me outside, I took off like a flash.
“Take care of yourself now.” Jay said, “hope you find what your looking for.” Running in the snow felt good. It felt good to be free and have know responsibilities. For two days and two nights I ran. Along the way I caught rabbits and small birds. I was surprised I even knew how to hunt. Guess it was just built in. On the third night I was resting comfortably in a little den I’d dug when I caught a scent on the wind. Curiosity getting the better of me, I lifted my nose higher and took a deep pull of air. The scent that hit my nose made me perk up my ears in excitement. Not far away was my master. For almost two months I had been looking for him, and now I’d found him. With a woof of excitement, I leapt out of my den and began to follow the scent of my beloved master. After what felt like an eternity, I followed his scent to a small clearing. Peeking through the bushes I saw him sitting by a fire, a woman sitting next to him.
“How are you enjoying the camping trip Sky?” she asked him kindly.
“Fine.” He said in his quiet voice. Quivering with excitement at finally finding him, I lay down with my head on my paws to wait for the woman to leave. When she had finally went inside the tent, I began to slowly creep out of the trees. My master turned at the sound of the bushes rustling, his military senses peaked.
“M- Maya?” he asked in astonishment. In answer, I whined softly. For the first time since I’d known him, I saw a broad smile on his face. Slowly, very slowly I approached him, not sure how he’d react to me after being apart from me for so long. To my surprise, he reached out and gathered me in his arms.
“You have know idea how much I’ve missed you.” He said in a gentle but quiet voice, “I’ve thought about you every day since we parted. I know you can’t understand me, but I love you Maya. I love you more then anything.” As he said this, he began to stroke me over and over again. Instead of pulling away, I reached out with my muzzle and licked his chin. I had never done that to any other human, and it was my way of telling him that I belonged to him and him alone. I had finally found my one true master, and nothing would ever separate us, ever.
It was a year and a half later, and I lay stretched out in the sun on a small hill in a large backyard. Shortly after finding me, my master had taken me to his house in the country. The house was huge, and at first I was afraid to go in, for I was never allowed in a building before. With a little gentle coaxing by my master, I entered the house and sm
